The Garden Bench class is an excellent introduction for anyone interested in woodworking or as a gift for your favorite DIY enthusiast. We will cover wood selection, basic milling, joinery, glue-ups and assembly, and of course finishing. The project itself is designed to be simple without being simplistic, and should be a good challenge for beginning woodworkers.

New Class! West Coast Shaker

April 13th or 14th

We have been meaning to offer a class involving our collaborator Manny Torres and his laser cutter, and we have long admired the shaker box for its beauty and simplicity. For those of you who wonder what lasers and Shakers have in common? consider this: the shakers invented the circular saw, and if that pesky vow of abstinence hadn’t proved their undoing, they could easily have invented the laser as well. So lets celebrate the impressive craft legacy of the Shakers by building boxes the way that they would want us to: with piety and lasers!

Class Dates: April 13th and 14th Cost TBD

(stay tuned for a picture of a shaker box built with lasers, to be posted as soon as we build one…)

Nongla Restaurant (opening soon)

See images of Nongla Restaurant construction in progress. This project features another collaboration between Knowhow Shop, 2ndwnd and a local restaurant. Nongla, a Vietnamese restaurant, is opening soon on Sawtelle Avenue. Knowhow Shop designed the seating and 2ndwnd laser-engraved the signage.

HONEYSUCKLE PLANT SHELF

2ndwnd uses laser-etched reclaimed pine, a drinking glass and custom-fabricated stainless steel to create a unique planter shelf — perfect for hanging both indoor and outdoor. Please contact Manny at 2ndwnd for further details on specs and purchasing. Stay tuned as it will soon be available in the Knowhow Shop online store!

JUST ANOTHER DAY AT THE SHOP

2ndwnd laser-etched a wood panel for Self Help Graphics, a visual arts center that seeks to advance Latino art in Los Angeles.

This mysterious plywood pyramid will soon serve as a public art project coming to a sidewalk near you:

Finally, just in case you missed it on our Facebook page, Knowhow Shop founders Kagan and Justin continue with their CNC milling experiments. The extraordinary mustache table top was an earlier mill job:

Next up, sitting on the xerox butt bench feels a bit like you are intruding on someone else’s personal space:

THE OINKSTER IS DONE

In case you missed it in the NotCot Tasteologie post, the Oinkster renovation is DONE. Check out the highlights of Knowhow Shop, Dutchpress, FreelandBuck, and 2ndwnd’s collaboration below. But also check it out in real life and enjoy a burger and fries at one of the best burger joints in Los Angeles!

Pop Tree: The Unfolding Xmas Tree

2ndwnd helped lasercut an alternative sustainable Christmas tree designed by Leilani Trujillo. The Pop Tree, made of silk-screened chipboard and birch plywood, is inspired by pop-up origami. It unfolds to bring life to a flat, inconspicuous object.

Please purchase a Pop Tree and support the first production run through its Kickstarter page!

The Oinkster renovation is near completion and shaping up nicely. Here are images of the menu board in progress. It’s a solid team effort between Justin Van Hoy of Dutchpress working out the graphics, Knowhow Shop and FreelandBuck Architecture designing the board, and laser cutting/etching by 2ndwnd.

Burger Nickels from 2ndwnd

Hot off 2ndwnd’s laser bed, these Burger Nickels are etched from red oak. In the future, you can use them to get half off a regular priced burger at the tastiest burger joint in Northeast LA, The Oinkster.
